platforms2share co-organizes session on the Potential of Cooperative Models for the Platform Economy at the EUSES (06/05/2021)
How can appropriate legal frameworks and cooperative platforms ensure a better distribution of economic gains and secure social rights in the platform economy? Together with Smart Belgium, Pour la Solidarité and the Utrecht University, Dominika Wruk from platforms2share organizes this session, that addresses both challenges that major digital platforms bring upon communities across Europe and possible solutions, both at institutional and organizational level, that can counteract these. How are sharing organizations’ business models linked to values? Paper presented at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting 2019 (06/09/2019)
Dominika Wruk from platforms2share together with her co-authors Achim Oberg, Jennifer Klutt & Indre Maurer developed an approach to analyze how business models and values are linked. Applying this approach in the context of the sharing economy, they found two strategies to link models and values: Grassrots initiatives mainly address sustainability values while platform-based organizations mainly address economic values. It will be interesting to see, whether platform cooperatives represent a hybrid model by linking a platform business model to sustainability values. more...

Organizing the Wisdom of Crowds: How Wikipedia Helps to Theorize and Legitimize the Blockchain (31/07/2020)
One approach to attack positions of dominant platform organizations is seen in a new technology: Blockchain – a technology enabling safe, secure and private transactions between parties without a central mediator owning technology and data. In their current research, Tino Schöllhorn and Achim Ober from platforms2share study whether the diffusion of the technology can be explained by its linkages to illegitimate or legitimate domains at different points in time. How do the fields of blockchain, cooperativism and sharing overlap? (30/07/2020)
Platform organizations that combine sharing business models, cooperative ownership structures and blockchain technology are proposed to be more just and sustainable alternatives to dominant platform models. While attributed a high potential, the spread and legitimacy of such models are low. At this year’s LABOR.A conference, organized by the Hans Böckler Foundation (HBS), platforms2share performed a scenic play that raised the question of how the cooperative form could be made fit for the digital age in order to reorganize platform work.
