In their introduction to the special issue on the platform economy, the authors Wruk, Pentzien, Wolff and Kludas sketch out the current controversy over the platform economy.

In recent years, digital platforms have become an essential part of almost all areas of life. Here, "digital infrastructures" offer the possibility to create platforms for areas that were previously difficult to implement. The associated „Sharing Economy“ caught the interest of sustainability research. At the same time, current platforms are criticised in the form of precarious working conditions for providers, the exploitation of legal grey areas and the inadequate privacy of users. The cause is often seen in the monopoly-like position of the platforms in the respective market segment, which is reinforced by the network effect. The avoidance or reduction of these negative effects of monopolisation tendencies is currently being intensively discussed. These include cooperative organisational approaches as well as block-chain technologies which can be summarised under the keyword "decentralisation". The article thus introduces the focus platform economy and the discussions presented on opportunities and risks around the topic of platform economy.
